3 hari lalu, kabar menyedihkan datang dari San Francisco: versi terbaru Mapbox GL JS v2.0 akan dijadikan proprietary. Tadinya, library Mapbox GL JS dilisensikan di bawah lisensi Open Source BSD. Kabar ini begitu mengguncang developer peta seantero dunia karena, seperti kalian tahu, banyak sekali perusahaan dan organisasi yang menggunakan Mapbox GL JS langsung dari sumbernya atau mem-fork dari repo-nya. Bagaimana tidak, library Mapbox GL JS selama ini membantu banyak orang dalam memvisualisasikan basemap dengan kemampuan kartografi yang begitu fleksibel dan indah. Melakukan desain peta dengan menggunakan Mapbox GL JS semudah menggunakan CSS, tak perlu utak-atik sana-sini terkait dengan script js-nya, ya mungkin sedikit saja lah. Sebelumnya, MapboxGL ini bersifat Open Source, memberikan solusi menyeluruh untuk developer peta dan dapat digunakan dengan berbagai macam sumber data, jadi secara ijtima’ para developer : MapboxGL adalah library fardhu ‘ain untuk basemap.

Di bawah Breaking Changes hati kalian akan tertusuk :
- Mapbox-gl-js tidak lagi di bawah lisensi 3-Clause BSD.
Saya tidak memperkirakan ini akan terjadi. Ya, MongoDB tergiur untuk proprietary karena AWS “membajak” teknologinya untuk dijual. Tapi, siapa yang terpikir Mapbox akan mengambil langkah ini?
Sebelum lebih jauh membahas masalah perubahan menyedihkan, mari kita apresiasi Mapbox.
Saya pribadi belum pernah memiliki kebutuhan hingga sejauh Video 1, tapi : “Wow, gila. Mereka mengembangkan library ini hingga level sangat jauh dengan kemampuan seekspert ini.” Belum sampai disitu, library Mapbox hanya bertambah sekitar 40kb gzip (Fuzzytolerance, 2020).
Mapbox GL JS membantu kita dalam berbagai macam tools geospasial yang tadinya sulit untuk dilakukan hanya dengan CPU dengan mengambil kemampuan dari GPU. Kita sebagai pengguna awam tidak mungkin membangun fitur sebanyak mereka dengan budget dan waktu yang begitu besar dibalik kemudahan penggunaan Mapbox GL JS.
Keputusan Mapbox untuk merilis v2.0 yang proprietary ini memang mengguncang komunitas open source secara umum, dan geospasial secara khusus. Mapbox v1.0 yang selama ini kita pakai sangat populer di kalangan komunitas open source dan geospasial dengan identitasnya yang terbuka. Mapbox memiliki 800 lebih proyek open source dan secara konsisten selalu berada di peringkat 40 besar di dunia dalam aktivitas repositori umum di Github.
Tentang Perubahan Ini
Joe Morrison mengatakan bahwa dia juga terkejut dengan kabar ini.
Sampai kemarin, aku masih bergelantungan dengan cerita romansa optimistik tentang business model open source. Mapbox adalah seorang protagonis dari cerita yang kusampaikan berkali-kali kepada orang lain dan diriku sendiri. Ini adalah cerita tentang konsep business model open core yang bisa digunakan untuk berbagai perusahaan perangkat lunak.

Dia selanjutnya menerangkan tentang keberhasilan beberapa perusahaan open source seperti Elastic, D2iQ (Mesosphere), MongoDB, dan Cloudera yang berhasil membukukan valuasi hingga miliaran dollar. Lebih lanjut, dia menyampaikan bahwa ini mungkin adalah awal kematian dari open core business model. Yang membunuhnya? Siapa lagi kalau bukan para cloud.
Sebenarnya perubahan seperti ini pernah dilakukan Mapbox : dari Tilemill (open) yang berubah menjadi Mapbox Studio (tertutup). Jadi, ya mungkin tidak terlalu mengejutkan.
Dampaknya untuk Industri Geospasial
Seperti yang telah saya sampaikan di paragraf pertama, banyak organisasi dan perusahaan yang menggunakan Mapbox GL JS langsung atau mem-fork darinya. Perubahan lisensi ini, menurut Carto, menjadi poin penting dalam netralitas basemap. Netralitas basemap menurut mereka adalah penggunaan basemap dengan bebas untuk dimanfaatkan bersama dengan layer kita sendiri.
Biasanya peta digital baik web maupun mobile dibangun atas dua elemen : basemap layer, dan layer kita. Mapbox sendiri tak hanya menawarkan kemampuan kartografis namun juga visualisasinya. Jadi dengan Mapbox GL JS kita hanya perlu menggunakan library mereka untuk layer basemap dan layer kita.
Jadi, sepertinya kita kehilangan kemampuan ini untuk Mapbox GL JS v2.0
Alternatifnya?
Kembali merujuk pada Carto,
Kita dapat menggunakan deck.gl. Aplikasi yang tadinya kita develop dalam MapboxGL dapat kita ubah dengan hanya menggunakan basemapnya saja dan memindahkan layer kita ke deck.gl. Dengan begini kita dapat mengubah basemap sesuka hati.
Carto sendiri akan terus mengembangkan Mapbox GL JS v1.13 yang telah di-fork dan didevelop. Jika kalian ingin melihat contohnya, bisa dilihat disini.
Kesimpulan
3 hari ini menjadi hari kesedihan pengembang open source. Tapi bagaimanapun sebagai pengguna terbesar Mapbox GL JS, kita yang ada dalam industri geospasial perlu carry on dan mulai mempelajari alternatifnya : deck.gl.
